Macau is a bit of a strange bird as it is both European and Chinese. It is the oldest European settlement in Asia but very little of the architecture, culture and language remains. It reverted to Chinese sovereignty in 1999 and, like Hong Kong, is a Special Administrative Region of the motherland.
All signage is still in Chinese and in Portuguese but – except for the nightly news from Lisbon – there appears to be very little left of the European colonial power. The region has become very big in gambling with MGM Grand, The Venetian and Wynn’s (big names in Las Vegas) opening new hotel/casinos. Other than a really weird waterfront development that reminiscent of Universal Studios in Burbank, CA, there isn’t a whole lot else to see.
